Valerie Matarese PhD is an independent biomedical editor and writer based in Italy

I am a self-employed biomedical editor and writer, and a native English speaker who is also fluent in Italian. Since 1997, I have collaborated with researchers, publishers, companies and governmental agencies by offering a range of editorial services:

Papers I edited have been published in, for example, PLoS Genetics, Genes and Immunity, Autoimmunity Reviews, Blood, Journal of Medical Genetics, Carcinogenesis, Clinical Immunology, PNAS, Analytical Biochemistry, Redox Biology, Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers and Prevention, Arthritis Research and Therapy, Cellular Microbiology, Molecular Cancer, Proteomics, Lancet Infectious Diseases, Journal of Molecular Cell Biology and others. I also edited large volumes for the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (Trieste office) and the Italian Forestry Service (LIFE Project), and served as science writer for the US National Institute of Mental Health (neuroAIDS project) and for the IBISCUS International Bracco Imaging School. Between 1999 and 2006, I copy-edited six medical journals in neurology, diabetology, headache, sports science, coloproctology and orthopaedics. Between 2007 and 2018, I was a regular contributor of original scientific content to MDCT.net, a website for radiologists. Occasionally I am invited to peer review (Publons).

I was born in New York, USA, and earned a bachelors of science (BS) in biochemistry in 1984 at Cornell University (New York) and a PhD in biochemistry, cell and molecular biology at the University of Minnesota in 1990. I worked in basic research in oral microbiology at the University of California at San Francisco (1984–1985), in cell and molecular biology at the Whitehead Institute (1990–1992) of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and in molecular pharmacology at GlaxoWellcome Medicines Research Centre in Verona (1993–1998). As author of original publications (Medline; ResearchGate), I have first-hand knowledge of biomedical research and publishing.

To stay current of the latest standards in scientific reporting, I am an active member of Mediterranean Editors and Translators and World Association of Medical Editors, and was a long-time member of European Association of Science Editors and Council of Science Editors. I am an advocate of good scientific writing and adherence to internationally accepted standards for quality reporting in the biomedical sciences, as shown by my recent publications:
